A framework for the design and analysis of incentive systems for food safety control in supply chains AgEcon
van Wagenberg, Coen P.A.; Backus, Ge B.C.; van der Vorst, Jack G.A.J.; Urlings, Bert A.P..
Since 2005 the EU food industry has primary legal responsibility for food safety control. This requires new responsibilities and relationships between government and industry, and between companies. This research presents a framework for incentive systems for food safety control in supply chains. It emphasizes key elements of food safety control from multiple perspectives and provides insights for the design and analysis of incentive systems for food safety control. An incentive system combines inter-company incentive mechanisms with intra-company decision making processes to control a hazard within the legal environment. Incentive mechanisms, which consist of a performance measure and a performance reward, induce companies to use control measures. The...

A FURTHER LOOK AT THE EFFECT OF FEDERAL TAX LAWS ON OPTIMAL MACHINERY REPLACEMENT AgEcon
Van Tassell, Larry W.; Nixon, Clair J..
Self-employment taxes, "effective" marginal tax rates, and discounting schemes which allow for alternative purchase and disposal dates of machinery are incorporated into the traditional optimal replacement interval model. Empirical results indicate that these alterations decrease the optimal replacement intervals by up to three years from those obtained with traditional modeling assumptions. Inclusion of self-employment taxes decreases both the penalty attached to early replacement and the net present value (cost) of tractor ownership.

A főfoglalkozású egyéni gazdák habitusai Magyarországon AgEcon
Kovacs, Terez.

A Game Theoretic Approach to Analyse Cooperation between Rural Households in Northern Nigeria AgEcon
Gerichhausen, M.; Berkhout, Ezra D.; Hamers, H.J.M; Manyong, Victor M..
To improve the livelihood of the poor in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) much attention has been paid to the development of new agricultural technologies. We hypothesize that farmers can also improve their livelihood through cooperation. Partial cooperation, in which knowledge is shared or bargaining power improved, is relatively common in SSA, while cooperation where all resources are fully shared, which we address, has rarely been investigated. An important pre-requisite to establish such cooperation, is the need for a fair division rule for the gains of the cooperation. This paper combines linear programming and cooperative game theory to model the effects of cooperation of (individual) households on income and farm plans. Linear programming establishes...

A Game Theoretic Approach to Organic Foods: An Analysis of Asymmetric Information and Policy AgEcon
McCluskey, Jill J..
Demand for healthy, safe, and environmentally friendly food products has been increasing. In response, producers are marketing organic and other quality-differentiated foods, sometimes claiming to have followed sound environmental and animal welfare practices. These products frequently have unobservable quality attributes. If the profitmaximizing producer is able to deceive the consumer with a false claim, then he or she will enjoy a higher price with lower production costs (compared to the full disclosure outcome). The analysis described in this paper shows that repeat-purchase relationships and third-party monitoring are required for high-quality credence goods to be available. Policy implications of this analysis for national organic food standards are...

A gazdálkodók képzettsége és a tanácsadás AgEcon
Szekely, Erika.
A magyarországi gazdálkodók az EU 27 tagállama közötti képzettségi rangsorban a 19. helyet foglalják el. Ezért rendkívül fontos a tanácsadás igénybevételének szorgalmazása. A szaktanácsadási rendszer szereplőinek elsődleges feladata a tanácsadás piaci keresletének bővítése.------------------------------------------------------- By European comparison the professional expertise of Hungarian agricultural producers can be considered poor, although not among the...

A gender performance indicator for irrigation: Concepts, tools and applications AgEcon
van Koppen, Barbara.
Although gender issues are today a priority on the agendas of irrigation policy makers, interventionists, farm leaders and researchers, there is still a considerable gap between positive intentions and concrete action. An important but hitherto ignored reason for this is the lack of adequate generic concepts and tools that are policy-relevant and can accommodate the vast variation in irrigation contexts worldwide. The Gender Performance Indicator for Irrigation (GPII) aims to fill this gap. In any particular scheme, this tool diagnoses the gendered organization of farming and gender-based inclusion or exclusion in irrigation institutions. It informs irrigation agencies what they themselves can do for effective change-if necessary. The tool also identifies...

A GENERAL FRAMEWORK FOR EVALUATION OF CNP'S GRAIN PRICE POLICIES IN COSTA RICA AgEcon
Cervantes, Carlos F..
Among the different institutions through which the Costa Rican government influences production and internal marketing of agricultural commodities, the Consejo Nacional de Produccion (CNP) is the most important one. The Consejo is given by law a great deal of authority in fomenting production and stabilizing prices of food products. It is also entitled to perform a wide range of activities and marketing functions affecting the food system (buying and selling, assembling, transporting, storing and processing, importing and exporting, price fixing, input distribution, etc.). Because of the strategic role of agriculture in the country, and due to very significant influence of the Consejo's intervention upon production, marketing and consumption in...

A globális gazdasági válság és a magyarországi agrárgazdaság kilátásai AgEcon
Magda, Sandor; Magda, Robert.

A Government Decision Model for Invasive Species: Choosing the Most Efficient Government Program for the Management of Livestock Diseases AgEcon
Zhang, Yichen; Muhammad, Andrew; Coble, Keith H..
The impact of invasive species has grown substantially in recent years as evident by the trends in government expenditures in response to outbreaks. In this paper, authors analyze advantages and disadvantages of current government compensation measures for invasive species. The conceptual models are built to describe the relationship between producers’ utility and the effect of adoption of different measures under different observability condition. As a case study, a survey is designed to analyze producer behavior in mitigating AI & END outbreaks.
